Job
Postings Consistency Continues – Late Summer Effect Seen
(Albany,
NY, August 22, 2012) – The third quarter continues to be in line with
analysts’ projections – a stronger quarter for hiring than the first two
quarters of the year and we are seeing this in the Capital Region as well, even
with a bit of a slowdown so slightly this past two weeks. “This is not uncommon
– the last few weeks of summer in advance of Labor Day we see the market drop
slightly so it is not concerning”, stated Dan Moran, of Next-Act (www.next-act.com),
a career transition management firm located in Colonie.
“Postings
were down very slightly to 1670 from 1788 the week prior. There still is
consistency in the numbers as they seem to be holding at higher levels than the
first half of the year. We are still, however, far behind last year at this
time”, continued Moran. This news is on the heels of NYS Dept. of Labor news
that the State has recoup all the jobs lost during the recession which is
excellent, while the US as a whole has recovered only 44% of jobs. “Clearly NYS
has been stronger in job growth and this will hopefully continue. Employers
need to see confidence in the economy before hiring in masses – they are not
quite seeing that yet, but feeling a bit more confident”.
NEW – How many job
postings are there in the United States today? We will be watching this
nationally going forward.
As
of 8/22/12, there are on a seven-day-average 555, 314 job postings
in the national market, down from 567,247 the week prior, indicating a
down trend but slight. The top five areas for the most jobs per capita remain
unchanged: San Jose, CA, Washington DC, Boston, MA, Raleigh, NC and Oklahoma
City, OK. There is one job posting per unemployed person in each of these
markets meaning the market is much less competitive.
Other
markets in NYS were generally down slightly from the week before. The Capital
Region still outpaces Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, all larger markets with
more employers and population.
